I think a huge part of this, too, is that we don't value craft. Was discussing this with my film club last night -- screenwriters' lack of interest in the *craft* of screenwriting is obvious in newer movies.
Learning a skill forces you to mature; the dictum to "express yourself" has evolved to see skill as oppression. I hate talking that way, but as someone who toiled in workshops and internships and apprenticeships, it's hard to not to see.
